Ingvi Freyr's Fields

Picture
Ingvi Freyr's gardens are located south of the Grove, and comprise about ten acres.  This past summer we grew Atlantic giant pumpkins, Painted Mountain flint corn, Cherokee Purple tomatoes,  potatoes, basil and other herbs,  and many other crops.   The Young Helper, one of His folk, is looking forward to next spring as he plans to build a roadside stand for selling his produce as well as beginning to sell at the local farmer's market and offering garden gleanings to the local food bank.  We've been discussing the possibility of community gardens.  For a small fee, people could have seed provided, ground prepared, tools provided, advice and support, and companionship  in their gardening efforts.   Sort-of a combined CSA and community garden endeavor.

All tillage is done with older but functional equipment, borrowed from family members
.  We have hopes of converting to draft animal power at some point although that would be a lot of work.  Dolly the half-Belgian draft shows aptitude for driving and has plenty of muscle for the job.  Sacred horses of the past were never expected to serve in this fashion but that was because horses were commonplace, part and parcel of daily life.  With this no longer holding true, having a Temple horse serve in this capacity will be a reminder of their part in our lives.  As one of Breidablik's community allies says, "Human history is written in hoofprints."
